Sensitive teeth treatment

When tooth becomes extra-sensitive to hot or cold intakes then the tooth is defined as sensitive tooth. In scientific terms, removal of outer layer of dentin and subsequent exposure of nerve endings on the outer layer of tooth thereby making the tooth sensory to hot and cold intakes.

Sensitive teeth can be categorized into dentinal and pulpal sensitivity. Both these sensitivity involve reactions from temperature and pressure. There are greater chances of sensitivity from cold intakes like cold drink than hot drinks. In some extreme cases, when the tooth sensitivity changes from cold to hot then it requires root canal treatment, urgently.

It is said that prevention is better than cure. This means that dental sensitivity can be reduced by following certain precautionary measure. These are:

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day. Floss daily
  • Use ultra soft tooth brush and brush gently.
  • Use only fluoride toothpaste and fluoride mouth wash.
  • If there is problem of grinding or clenching of teeth then get it treated immediately.

However, in case of pulpal sensitivity, there is no other treatment than root canal therapy. Delay in treatment may further exaggerate the problem which is strictly not recommended.
As for dentinal sensitivity, there is specific treatment that makes the sufferer get rid of the problem:

The dentist will diagnose the problem area and then start the treatment.

  • First the dentist will clean your teeth. If you have too-sensitive teeth then your dentist will provide you with local anesthetic.
  • A protective layer called varnish is applied after cleaning. This reduces sensitivity and strengthens your teeth.
  • An in-office treatment is also applied for sensitivity to block the openings in teeth and reduces sensitivity.

Always use fluoride rinses, recommended by dentist. Some rinses are acidic and have to be avoided.

In extreme cases of pulpal sensitivity, when tooth nerve is damaged then the root canal is treated. In some cases, there is high sensitivity, from a new amalgam filling, which recedes on its own in due course of time. An alternative treatment is to polish the filling which diminishes the condition of sensitivity.

Take proper care of your teeth and there will be less dental problems.
